Doug Darling, troop scoutmaster since August 2004, is currently
serving his second tour in that position in our troop. (The first was
from 2000-2001.) He also served as Scoutmaster of Troop 173, Keystone
Council in Carlisle Barracks, PA during his tour there as a student at
the Army War College 2001-2002. He also served as an Assistant
Scoutmaster in Troops 173 and Troop 176 between 19996 and 2000. While
Doug earned the Arrow of Light award as a Cub Scout in Iola, KS in 1962,
he never went on as a Boy Scout but was active in 4-H instead. However,
he became an adult scouter when his oldest son became a tiger cub in
Pack 3174 in September 1985. At the cub scout level, Doug has been an
Assistant Cubmaster, Cubmaster (twice), Pack Committee Chairman, WEBELOS
Den Leader, and Kaw District Day Camp and Round Table Staff. He has also
earned his Scoutmaster Key. For his efforts as an adult scout he was
recognized with the Kaw District Award of Merit in 1996. He is a
honorary warrior in the Camp Geiger Lodge of the Tribe of Mic-O-Say and
a brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow Tamegonit Lodge at Camp Naish.Scouting has a special place with his family. His oldest and youngest sons, John and Mark, made eagle scout in this troop in 1998 and 2002. His middle son Dan made eagle scout in troop 173, Heart of America Council, Leavenworth, KS in 2000. His wife, Paula spent six years as a den leader in Pack 3174 while her sons were cub scouts. Doug is involved in the Leavenworth community. He served as a member of the Leavenworth, KS Board of Education, Unified School District 453 from 1995-1999 and 2003-2007. He has been a member of the Leavenworth Lion's Club. He and his wife have been church youth sponsor in Copperas Cover, TX, Columbus, GA, and Leavenworth, KS. He is also an active member of the Leavenworth 1st Baptist Church. Doug graduated from the United States Military Academy, West Point, NY in 1974 with a BS degree and has a Masters of Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College (2002). He is currently Chief of the Tactics Division of the Combined Arms Doctrine Directorate, Combined Arms Center, Fort Leavenworth, KS. This job does occasionally require him to miss meetings as his duties take him around the world. He regards himself as fortunate to have the willing and enthusiastic support of the other adult members of the troop and the parents of the Scout in this troop. And we feek fortunate to have Doug as our Scout Master. |
